Duchamp-Forschungszentrum
Die gegenwärtigen Veränderungen in der Wissenschaft, der Kunst und
Gesellschaft erfordern ein Umdenken für Lehre, Praxis und Forschung an den
Museen. Vereinheitlichte Studiengänge und Hochschulabschlüsse in Europa
bieten auch deutschen Museen die Chance, die Nachwuchsförderung
international auszurichten. Das Staatliche Museum Schwerin besitzt mit 90
Werken von Marcel Duchamp eine der bedeutenden Sammlungen in Europa. Neben
der herausragenden Niederländer-Sammlung des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts beruht
die internationale Reputation Schwerins auf Marcel Duchamp. Neben der
Präsenz von Leihgaben in internationalen Ausstellungen konnte sich das
Schweriner Museum in den letzten Jahren auch im Forschungsdiskurs ein
beachtliches Renommee erarbeiten. Wissenschaftler des Museums wurden zu
Tagungen und Symposien eingeladen. Das 2003 herausgegebene Werkverzeichnis
spiegelt die bis dahin geleistete Forschungsarbeit wider. Nun steht das
Schweriner Museum an dem Punkt, wo sich die von Duchamp formulierte Frage
stellt: Where do we go from here?
Im Spektrum der museumsspezifischen Aufgaben wurde seit 1989 in Schwerin ein
ambitioniertes und konzeptionell ausgerichtetes Programm mit 158
Ausstellungen und 97 Publikationen realisiert. Mit dem in Schwerin zu
gründenden Duchamp-Forschungszentrum wird das Ziel verfolgt, den
Forschungsaspekt im Museum neu auszurichten und zu intensivieren und
Schwerin zu einem Ort des innovativen Denkens zu machen. Ganz im Sinne von
Duchamp, der „an Ideen interessiert (war), nicht bloß an visuellen
Produkten“. Die Arbeit des Forschungszentrums richtet sich auf die
Initiierung und Realisierung von kooperativen Forschungsprojekten zu
unterschiedlichen Fragestellungen, die bisher nicht in etablierten
fachübergreifenden Kooperationen bearbeitet wurden, und auf eine
internationale Vernetzung. Mit einer fachspezifischen Forschung und
Ausbildung von Nachwuchswissenschaftlern wird nicht nur auf die
Anforderungen der Zeit reagiert, sondern wird in Form des
Duchamp-Forschungszentrums aktiv mitgestaltet. Die hochkarätige und
facettenreiche Sammlung bietet einen unerschöpflichen Fundus für die
Konzipierung konkreter interdisziplinärer Forschungsvorhaben, deren
Ergebnisse in Ausstellungen, Diskussionsforen und Arbeitstreffen nicht nur
Experten, sondern einer breiten Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt und vermittelt
werden. Bei der Realisierung der eigenverantwortlich ausgeführten
Forschungsprojekten erwerben die jungen Wissenschaftlerinnen und
Wissenschaftler Fachkompetenz, und sie werden zu verantwortungsbewussten
handeln befähigen.
Ein Forschungszentrum für eine international ausgerichtete und
interdisziplinäre Forschung zum Werk von Marcel Duchamp existiert bisher
weder in Deutschland noch in Europa.

Current changes in science and art and transformations within society itself demand of museums new approaches to questions of education, praxis and research. European standardised degree programmes now offer German museums, along with other museums across Europe, the opportunity to structure their support of young researchers from a global perspective. With its holdings of 90 works by Marcel Duchamp, the State Museum of Schwerin houses one of the most significant Duchamp collections in Europe. Along with its outstanding collection of Dutch and Flemish art from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the State Museum of Schwerin’s international reputation is based on the Duchamp collection.
In addition to the loans it has sent out over
recent years to exhibitions worldwide, the State Museum of Schwerin has also
achieved considerable prestige in research discourse. Scholars from the
museum have been invited to conferences and symposia. The Duchamp catalogue
raisonné published in 2003 reflects the successful research conducted up to
that date. Now the State Museum of Schwerin has arrived at a turning point
where the question once posed by Duchamp must again be asked: Where do we go
from here?
Within the spectrum of museum-specific activities, an ambitious and
conceptually oriented programme with a total of 158 exhibitions and 97
publications has been realised since 1989 at the State Museum of Schwerin.
The Duchamp Research Centre to be founded in Schwerin will pursue the goal
of realigning and intensifying the focus of research within the Museum so as
to transform Schwerin into an interactive site for innovative thinking –
very much along the lines of Duchamp, who was ‘interested in ideas, not
merely in visual products’. The work of the Research Centre will be focused
on the initiation and realisation of collaborative research projects devoted
to a range of explorative questions that have not yet been addressed within
the scope of established interdisciplinary cooperation. Such projects will
encourage global networking. With subject-specific research and the training
of young academics, the Duchamp Research Centre will not only respond to the
challenges of modern times but will also actively participate in formulating
the questions to be posed. The distinguished and multifaceted collection
offers an inexhaustible source for the conceptualization of concrete
interdisciplinary research pursuits, the results of which can then be
conveyed through exhibitions, discussion forums and workshops, not only to
experts but also to the general public. Moreover, young researchers will
gain professional competence through the realisation of research projects
carried out on their own initiative, training them to assume personal
responsibility in their future professional activity.
Up to now there has been no internationally orientated and interdisciplinary
research centre, either in Germany or elsewhere in Europe, dedicated to the
work of Marcel Duchamp.
